Visit statistics

We count visits with Umami, an analytics tool we host ourselves. It sets no cookies. For each page view it records the page and its title, the referring site, the browser, the operating system, the device type, the screen size and the language. From your IP address it looks up the country, region and city, where its location database has them. It also records a few named events such as running the calculator or opening a link to a maker. Event values are coarse ranges, never the exact watts or hours you enter, and never the part of the address that holds your list.

Our web server passes your IP address to the analytics server with each request. Umami uses it in transit only, to look up the location and to compute a visitor hash, a code that tells one visit from another without a cookie. It does not store the address. The hash changes every month, so once a month ends, a visit can no longer be tied to a browser.

We keep the statistics for as long as the site runs.

What you enter in the calculator

Your appliances, watts and hours stay in the address of this page. Nothing is saved in your browser's storage. The calculator works them out on your device. A link you share carries the same setup in its address, and our server logs leave that part of the address out.

Server logs

Our web server records each request: the time, the page without its query string, the response, the referring page without its query string and the browser type. These logs leave out IP addresses. When you open a link that starts with /go/ from one of our pages, the server also logs which link it was and the page you came from. A separate error log records only serious server faults; such a line can include the IP address of the request that caused it. The server deletes all of these logs after 14 days.

Why we process this data

Statistics and logs rest on our legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)): knowing which pages and tools people use, and keeping the server running and secure. Emails rest on the same interest in answering you. We do not sell data and we do not use it for advertising.

Who processes it

  • Web hosting: netcup GmbH, Germany, runs the server that delivers the site and keeps its logs.
  • Visit statistics: Hetzner Online GmbH, Germany, runs the server our Umami installation lives on.
  • Email forwarding: Cloudflare, Inc., United States, passes mail sent to our address on to our mailbox.
  • Mailbox: Microsoft Corporation, United States, stores that mail in Microsoft Outlook.

The two server hosts, netcup and Hetzner, run servers for us and do not use the data for their own purposes. Statistics and logs stay in the European Economic Area. Email leaves it, because Cloudflare and Microsoft handle your message in the United States. Both companies are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is the legal basis for that transfer.

Email

Mail to hello@enoughwatts.com is forwarded by Cloudflare Email Routing (Cloudflare, Inc., United States) to a Microsoft Outlook mailbox (Microsoft Corporation, United States). We use your address and message to answer you and for nothing else. We delete the thread once the matter is closed, and at the latest 12 months after the last message.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy, a correction or the deletion of your data, and you can object to the processing described here, at hello@enoughwatts.com. Because the statistics hold no name, IP address or cookie, we can usually not link them to you. You can also complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
