What to know

A workday at a desk is light work for a power station. A laptop, a 27 inch monitor, the router, a phone and a desk lamp draw 139 W together, and nothing on the list has a motor, so there is no start surge to cover. Every station in the data passes the output check.

The routine is an 8 hour workday with the router on for all 24 hours, and the goal is one full day of it: 1,436 Wh. The laptop takes the largest share. It counts at 65 W, the charger rating listed most often for laptops and the most one pulls while it works and charges; once its battery is full it draws less.

Two habits stretch the station. Lower the monitor brightness, one of the settings that moves its draw. Run the laptop from its own battery first and charge it from the station later, so the energy comes out of two batteries instead of one.

A desktop PC changes the sums, and the question below works one out. A desktop also restarts if the station's switch over is too slow for it; the backup mode guide explains the switch time. For a longer outage, set the goal to 48 or 72 hours in the calculator.

Questions

What size power station do you need for a home office day?
This setup uses 1,436 Wh a day. Lasting 24 hours takes 1,436 Wh usable, about 1,689 Wh of rated capacity at 85% efficiency. It also needs 139 W of continuous output.
Which is the smallest power station that is enough?
The ALLPOWERS R2500 V2, at 1,920 Wh: 1,632 Wh usable gives 27.3 h of this routine. The ranking puts the smallest capacity first, then the lower price, then the lighter unit.
What if the computer is a desktop PC?
With a desktop PC (office tower, no monitor) in place of a laptop (while charging), the setup uses 1,564 Wh a day and needs 155 W running. 28 of the 54 power stations are enough for one workday, with the router on around the clock, against 28 for the setup above. The closest fit is the ALLPOWERS R2500 V2 (1,920 Wh).
